Airborne bathymetric lidar is one of the most exciting and rapidly-advancing technologies in the geospatial sector. Its uses range from safety of marine navigation (i.e., hydrographic surveying and nautical charting), to sediment transport modeling, benthic habitat mapping and monitoring, marine ecological assessments, flood inundation modeling, river morphology, coastal engineering, and more. Over the past two decades, lidar mapping has been demonstrated as an effective technology for collecting geospatial data for a wide range of applications such as geometric documentation of transportation corridors, smart agriculture, digital forestry, infrastructure monitoring, environmental management, archeological documentation, and resource inventory. lidar mapping continues to evolve due to the unprecedent developments in platforms (especially uncrewed aerial/ground vehicles), sensor technology, and emerging applications that could benefit from collected geospatial data. The workshop will introduce the fundamentals of deep learning, guiding participants through the creation of deep learning models from scratch. It will also cover the use of pre-trained models for image classification with PyTorch Image Models (TIMM) and image segmentation with Segmentation Models PyTorch (SMP). Additionally, attendees will learn to develop a custom data loader to train or fine-tune deep learning models using their own datasets.
