Dr. Tao Liu is an Assistant Professor at Michigan Technological University, specializing in remote sensing, machine learning, and environmental data science. He holds a Ph.D. in Geomatics from the University of Florida, where he focused on UAV-based multi-angle image analysis using statistical models, photogrammetry, and machine learning.
Dr. Liu’s research spans deep learning applications for land cover mapping, forestry, and climate resilience. He has secured funding from NASA, NSF, and USDA, contributing to projects on wildfire management, forest health monitoring, and AI-driven environmental analysis. His work is widely published in top-tier journals such as Remote Sensing of Environment and ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
Beyond research, Dr. Liu is an active leader in the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), serving as Director of the Remote Sensing Applications Division and Associate Chair of the Technical Division Directors Council. He also leads the AI/Machine Learning Working Group and organizes academic seminars to promote remote sensing advancements.
With extensive teaching experience in remote sensing, GIS programming, and deep learning applications, Dr. Liu is dedicated to training the next generation of geospatial scientists and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in environmental sensing and data science.
